This plate features dōdan-tsutsuji (Japanese enkianthus). The plant grows right beside our wood-fired kiln, and in the cool, refreshing days of May, it blooms with many delicate flowers. Its bell-shaped blossoms are charming, and the subtle gradation of color within each flower is especially beautiful. To faithfully capture this natural gradation, I pay close attention to how each layer of pigment is applied during the painting process. ⸻ To express the gentle charm of dōdan-tsutsuji, large leaves are placed above and below the composition, and the design is framed with a flowing wave pattern in a refined shade of purple.
