This piece was originally carefully fired in a wood kiln, but due to insufficient temperature, it was not suitable for use as tableware. However, its form and size were too beautiful to discard. In searching for a way to bring it back into use, we arrived at the idea of applying hand-painted decoration and refiring it in an electric kiln. The result is a truly unique piece— combining the surface created through years of trial and dedication by my father, with botanical paintings by his daughter, a Japanese painter. While preserving the original character of the vessel, delicately painted plants bring a gentle presence to its naturally subdued, earthy surface.
