It can be used over an open flame, as well as in the oven. Perfect for preparing a personal-sized hot pot, and since it is oven-safe, it is also ideal for dishes like gratin or doria. Its versatile design pairs well with Western-style soups such as pot-au-feu or minestrone, allowing for a wide range of uses. The gentle, earthy character unique to donabe clay is softened by a white glaze, creating a warm and delicate impression. The Oribe glaze applied to the exterior adds a sense of natural beauty. Inside the pot, I have hand-painted familiar plants, one by one. Wild mountain cherry blossoms and acorns that grow in the mountains, clematis and nandina from my garden, nemophila, viburnum, and rhododendrons I encountered in parks, and gerbera flowers lovingly grown by my aunt. Each motif is something small and quiet, yet deeply comforting—like a place the heart can return to. These beloved plants are carefully painted with that feeling in mind. This piece was originally carefully fired in a wood kiln, but due to insufficient temperature, it was not suitable for use as tableware. However, its form and size were too beautiful to discard. In searching for a way to bring it back into use, we arrived at the idea of applying hand-painted decoration and refiring it in an electric kiln. The result is a truly unique piece— combining the surface created through years of trial and dedication by my father, with botanical paintings by his daughter, a Japanese painter. While preserving the original character of the vessel, delicately painted plants bring a gentle presence to its naturally subdued, earthy surface.
